Ozashiki-Asobi with Geisha – Activity Highlights

Since the Edo period, the Bokutei area along the Sumida River has been well-known as one of Edo’s finest cherry blossom viewing spots. Situated alongside it is ‘Mukojima Kagai’, cherished by cultured scholars and artists for centuries. 【Ozashiki-Asobi Games】

The most well-known games are Konpira Funefune, Tora Tora, and Tōsenkyō, which are played with Geisha to liven up social gatherings.

【Konpira Funefune】

In this rhythmic hand-game, a Geisha and guest sit facing each other, using their hands and a tray on a small table in between. In time with a traditional chant, they alternate between “paper” and “rock”—the tempo quickens and excitement builds. It’s a lighthearted cultural experience that captures the essence of Edo-period tea-house entertainment.

【Tora Tora】

In this game, two players kneel opposite each other with a folding screen placed between them. On cue, they jump up and strike one of several poses—like a tiger, a soldier, or a hunter. The outcome is determined by a rock-paper-scissors-like logic. This playful game is full of laughter and surprise, offering a fun and interactive experience rooted in traditional Geisha entertainment.

【Tōsenkyō（Fan tossing Game）】

Tōsenkyō is a charming fan-tossing game in which participants aim to knock down a target (usually a figure on a wooden stand) by throwing a folding fan. Points are awarded based on the position of the fan and the target after the throw. This elegant and strategic game blends grace and skill, evoking the refined pastimes of the Edo period.
